Bihar Police Crack Araria Teacher Murder Case: Contract Killing Plot Led to Fatal Case of Mistaken Identity
Bihar Police have solved the murder of Araria schoolteacher Shivani Verma, revealing it to be a contract killing gone wrong. Investigators found she was mistakenly targeted after a woman allegedly hired shooters over suspicions of her husband’s affair. Three suspects have been arrested, and weapons and the motorcycle used in the crime recovered.
According to investigators, the murder was not linked to Verma in any way. Instead, police uncovered a planned contract killing orchestrated by a woman identified as Hushnan alias Hushn Ara from Forbesganj. Authorities said Ara had suspected her husband of having an extramarital affair with another local woman teacher and allegedly hired two men—Maruf and Sohail—for ₹3 lakh to eliminate the suspected rival.
The conspiracy took a tragic turn when the hired shooters mistook Verma for their intended target. Both women reportedly used the same route to school and rode similar scooters, while the actual target happened to be on leave that day. Acting on technical surveillance and forensic clues, the SIT tracked down the suspects and made swift arrests.
Police have taken into custody the three individuals believed to be directly involved in the plot: Maruf of Rampur, Sohail of Referral Hospital Road, and the alleged mastermind Ara, all residents of Forbesganj in Araria district. Officers also recovered the country-made pistol used in the crime, the motorcycle employed by the assailants, and the clothing and footwear worn during the attack.
The case has drawn widespread concern over rising contract killings and the vulnerability of ordinary citizens to targeted violence. Police officials said the investigation highlights the urgent need for vigilance, community cooperation, and stronger preventive mechanisms to avoid such irreversible tragedies. With the arrests made and key evidence recovered, authorities are now preparing the chargesheet as the case proceeds toward trial.
